A Simple Project for Pollinators and Backyard Birds
Looking for an easy way to support honeybees and local birds in your yard? We’ve had several customers ask how to build a small water fountain for bees or a circulating bird bath that’s low-maintenance, safe, and effective. Here’s a fun, budget-friendly DIY project that serves both purposes beautifully!
What You’ll Need:
- 120 GPH water pump (submersible)
- 1/2” x 6” vinyl tubing
- 1 carpet saver saucer
- A tapered flowerpot
- 11 quarter-sized holes drilled at the top of the pot to allow water to drain back to the pump
This small, recirculating fountain keeps water gently moving, perfect for bees to safely land and drink without risk of drowning. The moving water also discourages mosquito breeding, making it a win-win for pollinators and your backyard environment.
Why Bees & Birds Need It:
- Honeybees need a shallow, clean water source during hot summer months to help cool their hives and hydrate.
- Birds prefer moving water in a bird bath—it’s cleaner, fresher, and more inviting than stagnant pools.
Design Tip:
Add a few pebbles or flat rocks inside the saucer to give bees a place to land safely. You can also surround the fountain with pollinator-friendly plants for added color and function.
Simple, Functional, and Cute!
This setup took just a few minutes to put together, and it adds charm to any sunny corner of your garden. Whether you’re a beekeeper, birdwatcher, or just love supporting pollinators, this is a rewarding weekend project anyone can do.
