How it All Began...
Originally a family farm dating back to pioneer times, brothers Jerry and Dave Stevenson now proudly own and operate J&J Garden Center on the same land their father, grandfather and great grandfather farmed for generations.
The rich bottom land of west Layton produced bountiful crops of alfalfa, wheat, and onions for several generations until 1970 when the Stevenson family decided to try something different. That’s when a surplus WWII Army barracks, approximately 30' X 30', was moved onto the property to house and sell produce as a "truck farm" originally named J&J Produce.
After a couple of years, it was decided to plant some basic nursery items to support west Layton's burgeoning growth. Naturally, garden supplies were added as well. Today, J&J Garden Center is Utah’s largest producing nursery with over 100 acres under cultivation including five acres of greenhouses.
The Stevenson brothers are particularly proud of the fact that they've been able to reassemble most of their grandfather’s original homestead to become Utah's largest pot-in-pot tree nursery with over 100,000 trees in multiple varieties growing in their fields.
Because they're in our ground for a season or more before becoming available for sale, they become acclimatized to Utah conditions, which makes them hardy and ready for transplanting.
- Jerry Stevenson
"Some of our trees are grown from starts and some come from other nurseries, specifically in Oregon," says Jerry Stevenson. "And because they’re in our ground for a season or more before becoming available for sale, they become acclimatized to Utah conditions, which makes them hardy and ready for transplanting."
Consumers can be assured that any tree they purchase from J&J, whether it be an evergreen, shade, flowering, or fruit tree, is of the highest quality. Nursery Manager Dave Stevenson and his son, Andy, oversee all greenhouse operations as they plant over 1 million bedding plants and vegetable starts in preparation for the spring buying season. Andy Stevenson also oversees the planting of over 40,000 poinsettias that turn vivid colors in late October of each year.
In addition to the large retail operation, J&J is also the preferred provider of nursery stock for over 100 landscape companies. According to Jerry, J&J is so successful because they own all of their own land and water and can control all of their labor and transportation costs, which translates into high quality and reasonably priced nursery stock for the consumer and landscaper.
J&J Garden Center is "an American success story", with over 100 outstanding employees here to provide superior customer service while answering all of your gardening questions. If you’re looking for a reliable, family owned garden center that services Layten, Ogden, and surrounding areas of Utah, you have come to the right place.
